We have been asked many times why do we have such an unusual/quirky name for our pet business? Middlesbrough Rawhide Chew Company was started in the early 1980's by importing into Middlesbrough dog chews from abroad and in 1984 Harry and I purchased the on-going concern from another well-known pet business. Later on, we realised if anyone wanted to pay their bills by cheque, etc. the name was rather too long to write out, so my wife shortened it to "MIDCHEW". We expanded our range of goods from dog chews to various types of budgie/cockatiel seeds, dog biscuits, etc and started selling these on a one-day a week basis on the Redcar Sunday Market. Eventually we rented a unit in "In Shops", Coulby Newham, Middlesbrough, which, after a year of trading, expanded to 3 units. In 1992 we moved into our current premises so we could display and sell extraordinary animals. Click for more information on these animals.
